The earliest records of cricket at Stansted do not go beyond 1861. However, 1860 is considered the date Stansted Cricket Club came into existence. On Tuesday July 9th 1861 the Herts and Essex Observer reported a match between Stansted Junior Club and Harlow Club, the result coming out in favour of Harlow. The senior members played under the name of Stansted Park Cricket Club at that time and contained well known Stansted names such as Baker, Sanders, Ratcliff, Jay, Bedlow and Carrey. There is no record of where Stansted Park played their early matches but between 1871 and 1874 many matches were played at Hargrave Park. In 1881 the cricket ground was moved to the Recreation Ground but this was not entirely successful and the ground was moved to the junction of Bury Lodge Lane and Burton End in 1885. In 1891 £50 - £60 was raised and a pavilion was built and this is substantially the same pavilion that stands in Hargrave Park today. In 1921 the ground was sold and moved back to Hargrave Park, along with the pavilion, where it has remained ever since. The owner of the ground, Stansted Sports Association, was founded in 1933 largely due to the sale of Hargrave House on whose land the Cricket and Football Club stood. In recent history the club has had only three Presidents - Mr Myles Routledge (1934 - 1985), Mr Percy Heal (1985 - 2005) and Mr Robert Selby (2005 - present day).
